Third Month Pregnancy - List of Symptoms & Body Changes

The first three months of pregnancy are the most exhilarating. Isn’t it? As you know you are with a baby, but it is not visible to others outside. Keeping a close watch on the calendar, counting days to track your physiological changes, taking diet conscientiously is what all you start practicing. And eventually, you begin to feel another life growing inside you, giving you butterflies in your stomach while at the same time reaffirming your pregnancy. It all begins to feel surreal! As far as the growth of the baby inside is considered, the body starts developing and sex organs start to take shape.   

But hello this is not over yet as you have a long way to go!!! You know the journey of your pregnancy is no less than a marathon and there are still two trimesters left. Read on to know what changes will occur during your 3-month pregnancy and what symptoms usually show up during that time.

Common Symptoms at 3 Month Pregnancy 

Some of the third-month pregnancy symptoms which you will experience can be welcoming, but some might just screw you up. But remember these symptoms whether pleasant or unpleasant is normal:  

1. Loss of Bladder Control

With the growing uterus, there is an increased urine formation and greater pressure is exerted on the bladder which triggers the impulse to urinate often. Frequent loss of the bladder is one of the early symptoms of pregnancy. Nearly 54 percent of expectant mothers report the severity of this symptom, including a negative impact on their physical and emotional health. 

2. Vaginal Discharge 

As you are high on estrogen level and with the expansion of vagina walls along with cervix; vaginal discharge is observed in the form of an off-white or translucent mucous. This process prevents any sort of infection to pass through the uterus. However, if your vaginal discharge is more than normal or heavy then consult your doctor immediately as it might culminate into a serious problem, such as creating a problem in your placenta or even leading to miscarriage.

3. Abdominal Pain and Back Pain

Factors responsible for pain in the abdomen and back are the fluctuations in hormone levels as well as dilation of the uterus. During this time, you should try doing a few stretching as well as low-impact exercises but only after consulting your physician. Nearly 50-80 percent of women report back pain during this time of their pregnancy whereas more than half of women suffer from abdominal pain. Therefore, extra care needs to be taken during this time. 

4. Cramps in Legs

Common symptoms during this time are severe cramps or pain in the legs. Almost 90 percent of women complain of cramps in the legs and more often this happens during the night. It happens because you now have extra weight to carry, fluctuations in your metabolism, vitamin deficiency, etc. What you can do to overcome this discomfort is to include some gentle exercises in your regime and increase the intake of iron and potassium in your diet.  

5. Bleeding Gums

As hormone levels will be subjected to constant fluctuations which you will experience bleeding and inflammation in your gums. This is called Pregnancy Gingivitis. Nearly 60 to 75 percent of women suffer from red, swollen, and tender gums that bleed when brushed or even flossed. What you can do to keep this problem at bay is to use a soft-bristled brush and toothpaste containing fluoride.   

6. Varicose Veins 

The expansion of the uterus compresses the blood vessels and impacts the blood circulation in your body. This leads to the swelling of veins in your legs. What worsens it is your growing weight and the load it exerts on your circulatory system which results in the appearance of varicose veins. What you can do to avoid this is to exercise regularly and keep your weight in check.

7. Heartburn

Needless to say, the growth of the uterus exerts pressure on the stomach, and the expanding body mars down the digestion process. The pressure exerted on the stomach pushes the acid level upwards thereby leading to heartburn. So what you can do is to become particular with your meals and try to consume meals in small proportions at regular intervals. 

8. Nasal Congestion 

An increase in blood volume results in the inflammation and swelling of your nasal passages due to which you experience a blocked or a stuffy nose. This condition is called Pregnancy Rhinitis which affects nearly 18 to 40 percent of pregnant women. When this gets severe, it may harm both the mother and the baby as it may prevent your baby from taking enough oxygen; so speak to your doctor if this condition worsens.  

9. Fatigue  

Changes in hormones at the time of pregnancy can make you feel tired or drowsy. As the body requires more blood to be able to essential nutrients to your baby in the womb, it invariably impacts your blood sugar as well as pressure levels.  

10. Food Cravings 

It is a commonly known fact that mothers-to-be are bound to develop cravings for some food items whereas for some they might as well develop a strong repulsion and dislike even for their smell. It is a real phenomenon and several women suffer from this. Blame your fast-changing hormones! Some of the most commonly craved food items are:

  • Desserts such as candy and ice creams 
  • Fast food such as pizza or noodles
  • Dairy products such as cheese or pastries 
  • Cookies and fried; etc. 

But be mindful of what you are munching as an unsteady diet might lead to excessive weight gain and problems during childbirth.

Physical and Emotional Changes during 3rd Month of Pregnancy

1. Tender Breasts 

Your breasts tend to become very tender with the changes in your body as it prepares itself for breastfeeding. The breasts size grows and the areola t0o becomes bigger as well as darker. 

2. Visible Stretch Marks 

Stretch marks would become visible around your breast and belly area because of constant stretch in your skin at the time of pregnancy. 

3. Lack of Libido

Some women do feel excited and enjoy romance during the first trimester, but they lose interest towards the end of this period. It is because of the change in hormones and also because of the changes in the body physically which make women self-conscious.

4. Dark Line on the Abdomen 

The hormone which stimulates melanocytes is produced by the placenta which makes the nipples darker. In addition, it also darkens the area that connects your middle abdomen with the pubic bone. 

5. Disturbed Sleep Cycle 

Your sleep cycle may also become affected so much so that you may tend to wake up frequently in the middle of the night. This is nothing but fluctuations in your hormone level. 

6. Mood Swings and Depression 

Mood swings during this month are quite common. As your body starts to expand; you may start feeling conscious which results in losing self-confidence and eventually culminates into mood swings or depression. 

Important Tests to be performed during this Month 

1. Blood Test

It is performed to identify your blood group and Rh factor for anemia. 

2. Urine Test

This test is performed to determine your protein and sugar level in your body and to check if there’s any infection in the body or not.

3. Fluid Retention Test

To see if there is any swelling in the legs or arms.

4. Maternal Serum Screening Tests

A few tests are performed to identify whether there is any risk involved during childbirth in case the mother suffers from Edward syndrome, Down syndrome, or any other defects in the neural tube. 

5. First Trimester Screening Tests 

Your ultrasound test will be conducted to check for any sort of risk associated with the growing baby inside, to check for genetic as well as birth defects, and to identify parameters of chromosomal disorders. 

6. Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS)

This is a diagnostic test performed only on those expecting mothers who run a huge risk based on the conditions mentioned above. It is performed around 11-13 weeks of pregnancy to see if the fetus runs the risk of any congenital defects. 

Special Precautionary Measures required during this time   

Pay Attention to your Sitting Position at the same time 

  • Try and keep your back straight and your buttocks should be close to the back of the chair.
  • You can support your back using a lumbar roll or a rolled-up towel. Get yourself pregnancy pillows which are available almost in all specialty stores. 
  • Keep your body weight distributed on both hips.
  • Avoid sitting in one place for long. 
  • Relax your shoulders by placing your elbows and hands on your desk or chair
Pay Attention to your Sleeping Position during this Month 
  • Use pillows to elevate the upper part of your body which in turn reduces heartburn 
  • Place pillows beneath your legs to tackle pain in legs and overcome swelling 
  • It is advisable to use a body pillow or a pregnancy pillow to support the movement of your body and lend back support. 

In addition,

  • Do not lift heavy objects and avoid stressful activities that put pressure on your womb.
  • Do not consume fatty, oily, and spicy food that may mar your digestion system.
  • Wear comfy lingerie and loose-fitting dresses.
  • Your footwear too must be comfortable and flat so that no pressure is put on your feet and consequently on your back.

Now, What Exercises you can do during the Third Month!

Read on to know what exercises can be done to remain fit during the third month of your pregnancy:

  • Walk in the Morning: It helps to get over morning sickness and fatigue. Plus, you will feel refreshed as there will be increased blood circulation in the body.
  • Pilates: This form of exercise can help you build strength in your body and increase flexibility. 
  • Swimming: This is a great form of exercise and is highly recommended to pregnant women. It helps in toning down your muscles, firming your ligaments, and increasing the circulation of blood in your body. 
  • Yoga: If performed under the expert, it can do great wonders to your body.
  • Low-intensity aerobics: This form of exercise provides strength to your heart, tones down your muscles, and helps you get rid of body pain. 

What does your Baby look like during Third Month Pregnancy? 

The excitement level builds up by the time you enter into the third-month phase of your pregnancy and you start to ponder over what the face of your baby would look like. Though it would still be too early to feel any movements in specific however you will feel some sensation inside your womb. By the third month, the fetus grows about 3.5 inches long and approximately weighs 0.04 kilos, which is almost the size of a lemon or a ripe plum. The embryo is placed inside the uterus and the organs start showing growth. Here are the key features of the fetus development:

  • The formation of the baby’s genitals sets in 
  • Sucking and swallowing reflexes get kickstarted 
  • The baby also begins to hear stifled sounds from the world outside.  
  • Bone marrow starts producing White Blood Cells (WBC)
  • Kidneys begin to function 

If you are amongst the women with some uncomfortable symptoms, you might feel that every single day might get difficult to while away, but remember you are getting there slowly and gradually. So, look after yourself well and hang in there because with the end of this trimester you will feel more energetic and less nauseatic as the little angel will start kicking inside to cheer up your mood.
